ACOUSTIC QUALITY

The objective of this topic, which might be described as psycho-acoustics, is to objectivize the subjective sensation, that is to say to calculate parameters that correlate well with subjective listening. The objective notation process breaks down into two phases: the calculation of the different psycho-acoustic parameters and the transition from these parameter values to notes.

  Psycho-acoustic parameters

There are no universal psycho-acoustic parameters; rather, one needs to use parameters connected to each application if one wishes to obtain an appropriate classification.
However, relatively generic data fields do exist. After the parameters articulating an overall impression (loudness, frequency content), the noises perceptible for different components of an automobile are connected to different prominence: prominence in the frequency domain (here we refer to whistling or to acum) or prominence in the time domain (modulation).

The MicrodB toolbox contains a wide range of parameters defined in the literature but also specific parameters, particularly for impulsive and repetitive noises.

  Notation

Once the parameters for an application have been selected, the notation process involves applying to each of these a non-linear function representing the functioning of the ear, together with weightings designed to maximise the correlation between objective notation and subjective notation.
